Touchpoint of view: Carbon footprint

10.8.2022

Over the past few years, we have orientated ourselves with the greenhouse emissions produced by our company, to become more aware of our own part in climate change. Among other things, we have participated in the UN Global Compact's Climate Ambition Accelerator training in 2021 and, together with several Finnish clothing industry players, have committed to Finnish Textile and Fashion (central organization for textile, clothing, and fashion companies in Finland) Carbon-neutral Textile Industry 2035 commitment. This is for the readers as background information for the following statement:

"We have calculated and compensated the greenhouse emissions produced by our own operations for the year 2021, but we are not very excited about this ourselves."

On the other hand, we could highlight the matter like this; “We are now a carbon neutral partner!” or “Touchpoint succeeded in its goal of carbon neutrality in record time!”. But as we mentioned at the beginning, we have studied the topic in depth and thus the knowledge has increased our perspective. And don't get me wrong, we think climate change as a topic needs a lot more positive successes in the media than cynicism. But to be a responsible player in our field, we also want to challenge ourselves and others to be better.

So, we have now practically compensated the carbon footprint of our expert activities, which is formed by the energy use of our offices. The fact that we have calculated and compensated the carbon footprint of our own operations (aka. scope 1-2) is therefore not the whole truth. The focus of our work is to produce physical products for our customers. Greenhouse emissions are generated from the materials, transportation, sewing, finishing, storage, use, washing and recycling of these physical products, but since the entire clothing supply chain is not "owned" by us, a large part of the greenhouse emissions we cause are not included in the calculations of our own operations.

However, we can also influence the carbon footprint of our supply chain with our choices, and we have identified the materials of the clothes as the biggest source of emissions in our supply chain. Our work in the world of ever more ecological materials continues and we strive to inventory the emissions of our supply chain even more precisely, comprehensively, easily and transparently. Stay tuned because we'll definitely get back to it.

P.S. Many thanks to Green Carbon for compensation assistance and inspiring discussions and sparring sessions.
