Environmental values were a crucial factor in healthcare’s workwear competitive tendering
Recyclability and comfort were emphasized in Touchpoint’s collection for the healthcare industry. The collection was created in collaboration with healthcare professionals. What made this competitive tendering special, was that one of the main criteria alongside price and quality, was the recyclability of the workwear.
Sakupe Oy, a provider of textile maintenance services, is reforming the workwear of the healthcare personnel. The reform was preceded by an open tender, in which Touchpoint Oy came out as the winner. The design of the collection emphasizes sustainability in terms of material choices that affect the product the life cycle, as well as in the management of used textiles.
This competitive tendering was groundbreaking, since Sakupe Oy highlighted sustainability and recyclability as a key factor. “Hopefully in the future, due to this tender, the environmental aspects will also be taken into account as a standard, not only the price”, notes Outi Luukko the CEO of Touchpoint Oy. When developing the collection, equally important was the involvement of the end users. “The fact that healthcare personnel have placed our collection as the best, is a fantastic thing. As a company we have worked enormously for the collection and it feels wonderful to be involved in enabling more sustainable workwear collections for Finnish healthcare”, says Luukko.
“The safety of personnel and patients are at the core of workwear design in the healthcare sector, which is why it was crucial to involve the end users in the development process”, emphasizes Antti Tervo the CEO of Sakupe. “Together with safety and functionality we wanted to focus on sustainability and the life cycle of the materials. Instead of being burned, the garments of the collection that include microfiber will be recycled back to raw material at the end of its life cycle.”
The new collections will be in use at the Tampere University Hospital by the beginning of 2020. Later, the collection will be expanded to all five hospital districts of Sakupe Oy, including up to 20,000 people in total.
